The Sun is considered one of the most important celestial bodies in Jyotish. Wait, the Sun is a star, right? Why is it called a planet in Jyotish? Unfortunately, in English, there is no equivalent word for Graha, and it is loosely translated as “planet,” which doesn’t fully capture the inner meaning. A Graha is something that has the ability to hold or influence.
In any chart, the placement of the Sun is very important as it signifies the soul and is a karaka for health and vitality. It is also considered when evaluating a person’s spiritual journey.
By its nature, the Sun is a massive ball of fire, far larger than any other planet in our solar system. Fire can manifest in two ways:
- If you are at an appropriate distance, it illuminates the surrounding area with brilliance and light.
- If you get too close or combine with it, it can burn you.
Being a sattva Graha, the Sun illuminates and brightens its surroundings rather than burning them. Hence, it is called a krura Graha, not a malefic one.
Trishadaya houses
The Sun shares some traits with malefic planets, although it is not malefic. It performs exceptionally well in the 3rd, 6th, and 11th houses. Additionally, the Sun thrives in the 10th house, where it attains Digbala (directional strength).
- In the 3rd house – The Sun becomes strong and famous, with the individual’s written works and documents gaining recognition. However, since the 3rd house relates to siblings, there may be issues or conflicts with them.
- In the 6th house – The Sun plays a powerful role, acting as a king’s minister, a leader, and a learned, famous individual who triumphs over enemies.
- In the 11th house – The Sun bestows abundant wealth, a good nature, devoted servants, and favor from authority figures. Any planet in the 11th house tends to give good results.
- In the 10th house – The Sun prospers in the house of profession, granting a successful career in an authoritative position. It fosters bravery, a fighting spirit, and fame. With Digbala in the 10th house, the Sun fortifies this house, amplifying its effects and those of its own sign, Leo.

Moksha Trikona
The Sun, due to its fiery nature, does not harmonize well with the Moksha Trikona houses (4, 8, and 12):
- In the 4th house – The Sun causes distress, reduced wealth, and issues with domestic happiness.
- In the 8th house – Governing longevity and chronic health issues, the Sun may cause vision problems. On a positive note, it fosters deep research and fame resulting from it.
- In the 12th house – As a Moksha house and the house of foreign travel, the Sun may indicate forced exile, poverty, diseases requiring hospitalization, and isolation.

Dharma Trikona
When placed in the Dharma Trikona houses (1, 5, and 9), the Sun yields moderate results:
- In the 1st house – The Sun gives mixed results, including issues with eyesight agitated personality.
- In the 5th house – Being the Medha Sthana (house of intellect), the Sun stimulates an agitated mind with sharp memory and quick speech. However, it might cause issues related to children.
- In the 9th house – The Sun brings prosperity, wealth, and blessings in family life, but there could be challenges involving the father, as the Sun is the karaka for fathers.

Hoses of wealth
Sun, like any other malefic gives lot of wealth if he is connected with 11th /2nd house ,The Sun’s influence in the 2nd house brings good wealth and financial prosperity. However, along with wealth, it may also cause fear of theft and issues related to government fines.

The 7th house is another challenging placement for the Sun, as it can lead to a dry and strained married life, often void of intimacy and it is a separatory planet.
These results can change significantly depending on other factors, such as the sign the Sun occupies, aspects, and conjunctions and yogas.
